You can't take a credit on your federal taxes. However, some states let you deduct all or part of your 529 plan contributions.

In Illinois return:

Continue until you get to the screen titled "Here's the income that Illinois handles differently".
On that page, there will be a section for Education.
Click Start next to College savings and prepaid tuition plan contributions to enter your information.
