I am not a student, but I have 2 children who I bought uniforms, supplies and other school related items for, so I thought I could claim these items for deductions

Those expenses are not deductible on a federal tax return...

Those expenses are not deductible on a federal tax return. If they are deductible on the state return, you will be asked about them when you work on your state return.
