topic If my parents are paying for my graduate school tuition, but aren't claiming me as an independent, should I enter my 1098-T form information? in Education

I entered the 1098-T information just to see what would happen, and I qualified for a Lifetime learning credit, but I don't know whether I should delete the information before I am not the one paying my tuition.

If you are not claimed as a dependent by your parents, then you only can claim your education expenses.

The following is an extract from an IRS document:

Who can claim a dependent's education expenses.

If a student is claimed as a dependent on another person's tax
return, all qualified education expenses of the student are treated as having
been paid by that person. Therefore, only that person can claim an education
credit for the student. If a student is not claimed as a dependent on another
person's tax return, only the student can claim a credit.

I guess his question is: Do you treat your parent's payments to masters degree as a gift to oneself, and then file the 1098-T?

This is a 2 year old post. It doesn't matter where the funds came from and whether they were a gift or a loan. The issue is dependency. If the student cannot be claimed as a dependent, then the student claims the education credit on the student's tax return.
