      <description>&lt;P&gt;No. If all of the tuition payments that were made in 2016&amp;nbsp;were paid with tax free educational assistance, then you would not be able to claim an education credit, so you would not need to amend your return. If the amount in box 5 (scholarships &amp;amp; grants) is larger than the amount in box 2 (amounts billed), you dont have any qualified education expenses as a result of tuition. Please refer to page 13 of Pub 970, under the heading, "no double benefit allowed", for additional clarification. &amp;nbsp;&lt;A href="https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p970.pdf" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"&gt;https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p970.pdf&lt;/A&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;However, if you had other types of education expenses, such as books, that you paid for and that were not reimbursed through a scholarship, etc, you might qualify to take an education credit based on those expenses, and if you do, you could amend your tax return to claim the benefit.
