      <description>&lt;P&gt;UPDATED FOR TAX YEAR 2019&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;She does&lt;STRONG&gt; not need &lt;/STRONG&gt;to file a return (from the info provided in your question).&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;She &lt;I&gt;would &lt;/I&gt;have to file a return in the following circumstances:&lt;/P&gt;&lt;UL&gt;&lt;LI&gt;Her earned income (from her job) is above $12,200;&lt;/LI&gt;&lt;LI&gt;Any unearned income (interest, dividends, etc) is above $1,100;&lt;/LI&gt;&lt;LI&gt;Her income was from&lt;STRONG&gt; self-employment&lt;/STRONG&gt; [she was issued a 1099-MISC and not a W-2] and is $400 or more; or&lt;/LI&gt;&lt;LI&gt;She wants to get back any taxes withheld.&lt;/LI&gt;&lt;/UL&gt;&lt;P&gt;If she does file a return (to get back any withholding), be sure she indicates that &lt;STRONG&gt;someone else (you) claimed her as a dependent.&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;[Edited | 4/8/2020 |&amp;nbsp; 12:11pm PDT]&lt;/P&gt;</description>
