Enter that the materials were not required to be purchased from the school. Depending on which Education Credit you qualify for, TurboTax will use this amount as part of the calculation.

You can claim books, supplies, and equipment required for class under the American Opportunity Credit , but to claim them as qualified expenses under the Lifetime Learning Credit , you will need to have purchased them directly from the school.
