I did some work on an app called roadie and they sent me a 1099 for about $1200. Can I classify this as a hobby? I didnt consistently do it through the year just a few months of 2025. I did keep all my receipts for expenses throughout the whole year.

No. That is not hobby work. A hobby is for personal enjoyment and money may be a result, but for Roadie, this is for the purpose of making money, not a hobby. This will be considered self-employment income.

The good news is that since it's not a hobby, the expenses are deductible. Hobby income is taxable, but expenses are not deductible. As earned income, you can't avoid the SE tax, but if you don't want to pay income taxes, we might have suggested contributing to a retirement account or even an HSA. any of these would have to be done by 4/15
