The Schedule I can be reviewed by clicking the link, to show the Medical Expense Deduction being referred to.

If you would like to send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information it would help.  If you would like to do this, here are the instructions:

TurboTax Online:

Go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.

Then select Tools below Tax Tools.

A window will pop up which says Tools Center.

On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.

You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is.  Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.

Reply to this thread with your Token number and your state. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

TurboTax CD/Download:

If you like, you can send a copy of your return that will be scrubbed to eliminate your personal data by using these steps:

Click on Online in the top left menu of TurboTax CD/Download for Windows

Select 'Send Tax File to Agent'

Write down or send an image of your token number and state then place in this issue.

We can then review your exact scenario for a solution.

Please also tell us any states included in the return.

We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.

I’m also having this same issue. WI state returns. I’m able to go back through and re-review the WI questions but I don’t see anything asking for medical deductions, so I’m not sure how to proceed.

Medical expenses get entered on the federal section. TurboTax will automatically transfer all of your federal data to your state return. Enter all of your medical expenses in the federal section. Medical, dental, and vision expenses are reported on Schedule A and entered in the Deductions & Credits section.

With your return open, search for Schedule A and then select the Jump to link in the search results.

Enter your medical expenses, starting with prescriptions, on the following screens.

Hi,

I have an HSA and paid for all medical expenses through HSA. Per instructions I did not enter medical deductions in my federal since I paid for them with my HSA. I’m also doing the standard deduction rather than itemized. Additionally my HSA is post 2011 so the pre-2011 adjustments in the WI return do not apply. Should I be entering 0 for Schedule I: Part II, Line 1a, Col II in the WI return given this?

"Should I be entering 0 for Schedule I: Part II, Line 1a, Col II in the WI return " - were you thinking of doing this in Forms mode? I would prefer that you do as little as possible in Forms mode.

In the Wisconsin interview, you will see the following screen (this is from the desktop product, the Online screen may vary). Since you did not have an HSA before 2011, you should enter zero here.

When you enter zero here and then Continue, you won't see any additional screens asking questions about your use of the HSA since 2010. Then your Wisconsin Schedule I will be happily devoid of HSA entries except for the occasional zero.

See if this works for you.

Hi,

I can confirm I already have zero entered to the question in the screenshot you have shown.

If the input will not accept a zero (which is the correct answer if you had no medical expenses) then you can try entering 0.01 which is the same as a zero for tax purposes.

This prompt asks whether there should be an adjustment for an HSA you may have had prior to 2011. If you didn't have an HSA in those years, enter 0. If you did have a HSA in those years, enter any balance of your HSA as of December 31, 2010 less amounts distributed in 2011-2023. You may have accidently skipped the screen, Adjustments for Pre-2011 Contributions, when completing your Wisconsin return.

Per the Wisconsin Schedule I instructions, Wisconsin follows the federal treatment of distributions from an HSA for 2011-2024. However, if a portion of your distribution was allocated to the balance in your HSA as of December 31, 2010, you may be able to treat all or part of the distribution as a medical expense.

I'm having the same problem, and I can confirm I've entered 0. I also tried 0.0 and .01. I can't submit my return without fixing this and I can't find a way to fix it. Please help!

Go back through your HSA information you entered. Go to federal>deductions and credits> medical>1099SA, HSA... When you get to the 1099-SA summary, select edit next to your entry.

Navigate through the screens until you get to a screen that says, let's enter XXX HSA Contributions. Remove the zero and leave blank where it says Contributions XXX made (not through our employer)

Once done, this should remove Schedule 1 from your Wisconsin return since it doesn't accept zeros.

@user17744604217

Thank you, but that did not fix it.

The "let's enter your (non-employer) contributions" section is not in the 1099-SA edit section for me. It comes up after the form is added, and I click continue.

When I changed the $0 to nothing, the problem was not resolved. When I went back to try it again, I saw the $0 had been added back in, which I double checked as well. I cannot leave that blank.

What can I try next?

If that didn’t solve it, try this instead.

Sometimes the software holds on to a value even after you delete it. Removing the form completely and adding it back usually fixes the issue.

Delete the HSA entry: Go back to the 1099-SA summary screen and click the Delete/Trash Can icon next to your HSA entry.

Log out/Log in: This clears the temporary cache.

Re-enter: Go back in and re-add the 1099-SA. When you get to the "Personal Contributions" (non-employer) screen, do not type anything at all. If there is a zero there by default, try to backspace and immediately click "Continue."

2. Check the "W-2" Section

The software often pulls HSA data from two places. If you have a W-2 with Code W in Box 12, the software already knows about your HSA.

Go to Federal > Wages & Income > Edit W-2.

Check Box 12. If your employer contributions are there, the software might be getting confused if you also try to navigate the 1099-SA section for the same funds.

Ensure you aren't accidentally reporting the same money in the "Deductions & Credits" section as a "personal" contribution.
