I am a graduate student at a research university. I was awarded a fellowship that can only be used for research related expenses, and used this to pay housing when travelling for research.The money was not paid to me directly, but rather I paid and was later reimbursed from the fellowship fund. Would I report this reimbursement as taxable income?

Yes, this is taxable (but not as self-employment).

How you report it would depend on how they reported it, usually it is reported on a 1099-MISC.

If you have no formal tax form, enter it as "Other Income".

In the desktop program, start or open your return

Click FEDERAL TAXES

Click Wages & Income

Click "I'll choose what to work on" if needed

Scroll down to Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C (the last option) under "Less Common Income" and click Start

Scroll down to the last option "Other reportable income" and click Start

Answer "Yes" and Continue

Type Fellowship into the description box and the amount.
