I agree. I cannot edit the property tax amount either. The only option is either to start completely over with a new return, or file it and amend it later. I have read many other peoples' advice saying that you can just edit property taxes, but that is not true. For some reason, that field does not seem to be allowed editing.

If this is incorrect, someone please explain how to edit this field.

As a result it doesn't allow me to select 'Continue'.

We've been in the home for 35 years and no longer have a mortgage.

Thanks for your help

I believe what might have happened is that you answered in the affirmative to the question as to whether you received a Form 1098.

You should be able to resolve this issue by revisiting the Mortgage Interest and Refinancing section and deleting the form entirely (see screenshot). Subsequently, you should be able to enter the amount of taxes on your main home in the Property Taxes section.

@dih3

Pre-filled with a "$0" ? .... AHHH...

If it has an actual "zero" next to the $ sign, that means there is a "Supporting Details" sheet attached to that field.

1) In 2018 you added "Supporting Details" to that entry...probably to describe when & how paid.

2) The Supporting Details sheets transferred into your 2019 file (but they get emptied of $$ values during the transfer to the next year).

3) The Supporting Details are supposed to pop up as soon as you attempt to enter a value during the Interview...but it doesn't. (desktop Software Bug in my opinion..reported last year too)

4) Workarounds :

4a) double-click in the field and the Supporting details sheet pops up and you can either delete it (hit the big red "X"), and now make an entry...or you can use the SuppDetails worksheet to enter your $$....OR...

4b) Put your cursor in the box, and then go to the top menu on the screen and click on <Edit....then <<Add Supporting Details from the drop-down menu. IF the SuppDet box shows up you can either add your entry in there...or hit the Red "X" to delete the whole SuppDet worksheet and then make your normal entry.....or...

4c) One can also enter the proper $$ in the actual Worksheet in "Forms Mode"....if you cursor-drag hi-lite the $0, and then hit the "Forms" icon at the top of the screen, the actual worksheet line with the $0 will show up in Forms Mode. ...when attempting to enter any amount on that worksheet line, the SuppDet sheet pops up right away when you try to make an entry.

________________________

and the are other places ..like Medical Expenses, "Federal" Estimated Tax payments and (as you noted) Property tax payments...where the same "$0" issue may pop up in the interview.

You're a TurboTax genius - thank you!

You were right, it did create a blank supporting details sheet based on last year's file. Once I entered the 2019 amount there it populated the interview page. Not super-intuitive, but it worked!

Thanks for the workaround. Yes, I had the SAME problem last year, but forgot this is how WE (the paying customers) have to figure it out by going to other users for help. In my humble opinion, the TT software providers owe us a simple fix with the import process. In any case, they should at a minimum at least let the CUSTOMERS know how to enter the data with a pop up on the entry field.

Thanks for the help. I went back to the mortgage section, cancelled the data, then started re-entering. I then noticed that there was a line requesting the real estate tax paid. When I moved to the tax section I found that the correct value had already been entered. Problem solved.

It was my error: I simply missed the question on the mortgage.

I followed the workaround procedure, unfortunately it did not work for me. I double-clicked the field (where the "$0" is) per step 4a, a window pops up showing "Here is the information about your property tax you have entered so far". I don't see a Supporting details sheet. I don't have mortgage, and don't see Schedule A form such that I can't enter directly into the Schedule A form. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the reply. In order to get to the page of mortgage, interest, and property tax, I will have to enter the lender first. Shall I just make up a name as lender? On the mortgage, interest, and property tax page, I need to enter the mortgage principal, and origination date, it allows me to enter zero as mortgage principal, but I have to make up a origination date. Is that we supposed to do? I don't feel so comfortable to enter the make-up information.
