No. A home energy audit is its own eligible expense with a separate credit limit of $150. It is not a prerequisite for the 30% credit on your qualified heat pump equipment. You do need to ensure your unit meets the required efficiency standards and keep the manufacturer’s certification statement for your records.

See this article for a summary of the amounts available: Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (EEHIC)

Thanks, I was grappling with the Form 5695 fiasco and was looking at every possible issue that might have caused my efile to be rejected several times! It’s a pretty straightforward form to complete and I have an accounting background so I wanted to cross all my “t’s” just to be sure that the a home energy audit wasn’t somehow now needed.

I saw that the Form 5695 was a problem last year. It is very frustrating to have to deal with this again this year. I am expecting a refund and mailing in my return seems like that’s far riskier than waiting until Turbo Tax and the IRS to resolve this problem so that we can all efile our returns. After all, it is in their interest to do so!

Hey, Turbo Tax, if you are reading this community posting, you might want to consider refunding customers their efiling fee!!
