In 2025, we demolished the old detached garage at our existing home (it was in bad shape) and had built a brand new larger garage to replace it. I spent approximately $2200 to fully insulate the garage. There is no business use of the garage, just personal. Turbo Tax says "energy improvements related to new home construction don't qualify". So our garage is new but our home was built in the 1970's. Can I take get the credit for this insulation?

OK. Right after I clicked submit, I forgot to include the fact that I also paid for a new INSULATED garage door in addition to the wall insulation I mentioned. Would that count as well?

It depends. The garage door may be eligible for the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit. To be eligible it must be produced by a qualified manufacturer and you will need the QMID to claim the credit.

The credit for the door is separate from the insulation, and is 30% of the cost of the door with a max of $250 per door for up to 2 doors.

The total credit for doors, windows and insulation cannot exceed $1,200

This credit is a is a nonrefundable credit. This means in order to claim the credit you must have a tax liability to offset it. If you do not have a tax liability equal to the credit the credit will be reduced to match your liability or down to $0.

use it or lose it credit. If you do have enough tax liability in the year you buy and install the item, you will not be able to carry the credit forward.

Doors, windows and insulation must be installed on your primary home.

The home must be in the US
