Here is how to navigate to make the entry:

Click on Federal Taxes, Deduction & Credits

Choose HSA, MSA Contributions

Continue until you see a page titled "Let's enter (your name's) HSA contributions" which will show any deductions already computed from your W-2 in a box that is greyed out, and another box for contributions you personally made.

Enter the amount you personally made.

For some more information, see Basics of Health Savings Accounts

Thank you for the response, but when I came to my name (Shelley [removed])...following your instructions...

"Click on Federal Taxes, Deduction & Credits Choose HSA, MSA Contributions Continue until you see a page titled "Let's enter (Shelley [removed]) HSA contributions"... which will show any deductions already computed from your W-2 in a box that is greyed out, and another box for contributions you personally made."

I never had any distributions for 2025, so when I'm on the page where it says "1099-SA summary" I click the pencil next to my name, it takes me to a blank page to fill in distribution information (which I had none). It also does not show the contributions made from my employer from W2 on this page. This software package is very cumbersome and confusing. There is NO box to add my personal contributions of $354.52.

In summary:

W2: $9195.48 plus my own contribution $354.52 should be the max IRS contribution limit $9,550.00. But I cannot add my personal contribution of $354.52.

There is a sub-interview for the 1099-SA, which as noted is for reporting distributions from the HSA.

You were asked if you made any distributions from your HSA in 2025. Since you did not, you should have answered "No" or just hit Continue. However, based on what you have said, you evidently answered "Yes" or click on "Add", which caused TurboTax to ask you questions that did not apply to you.

Had you just continued past the 1099-SA distribution sub-interview, the very next screen would be the "Let's enter [name]'s HSA contributions" that Mindy referred to, in which you could enter on the second line any personal or direct HSA contributions.

What is very important is that no matter what, that you continue to the end of the HSA Interview until you see the HSA Summary. Don't jump out of the interview to go somewhere else until you finish the HSA Interview. Various parts of the HSA processing won't be correctly done unless you finish the interview.

So I eventually got to the HSA Summary screen. It shows my husbands name (Gregory) in first column, and my name (Shelley) in second column. In Gregory's column it showed his total distributions. In Shelley's column it shows my tax-free employer contributions from W2. You are saying that because I either jumped around or clicked the add button mistakenly, there is no way to get back to the screen where I can enter my personal contributions?

Of course you can get back to that screen. You just need to start the HSA Interview again.

On what platform are you using TurboTax? Online? Desktop/Windows? Desktop/Mac? On a mobile device (which is really the Online software)?

You want to go to Deductions & Credits->Medical->HSA, MSA, 1099-SA (or however it's listed). Tell TurboTax that you both have HSAs, then proceed. Alternatively, you might try to do a Search on HSA, and then "jump" to the HSA interview.

Note that the HSA Interview will go back and forth between you and your husband, so watch the screen title closely. After finishing your husband's sub-interview, it will come back to you (the title will say so), and the "Let's enter Shelley's HSA contributions" screen will appear.

There is a way for you to delete your HSAs entries and start over, but it can be a bit laborious, so let's try this first.

I use Desktop/Windows, and I file online. This software will not let me go back to the place where I can add my personal HSA contributions (so called HSA Interview). Seems like if you've been through the pages once, it will not allow you to go through this "HSA Interview" again, in its entirety. This is so frustrating. Why is this software so user UNFRIENDLY? I am following all your instructions to go back through the HSA Contributions and there is NO page that indicates to enter your personal contributions to HSA. I'm sorry this software really sucks. If you can have a consultant contact me and we can walk through on the phone I can share screen and show there is NO page to enter my personal HSA Contributions. I am totally frustrated not having a good experience with Turbo Tax.

Please try this, since we now know you have TurboTax Desktop.

At the top, click on Tools, then click on Topic List. Then scroll down to Deductions & Credits->Medical->Archer MSA/Health Savings Accounts (Form 1099-SA) and click on this.

This should take you to the first screen of the HSA Interview, where you enter the health-related accounts that you have (like the HSA). Be sure that you have checked that at least one of you has an HSA.

The next screen might read "1099-SA Summary". You can just hit Continue.

One more thing...is it possible you are confusing the "1099-SA Summary" with the "Your HSA Summary" (which is the end of the HSA interview)?

If you still can't find the "Let's enter Shelley's HSA contributions" screen, then please give us the title lines of the screens that you do see, starting with "Select the health-related accounts you had in 2025".

First of all, you said this: "Please try this, since we now know you have TurboTax Desktop."

I don't have desktop version, I file online, via windows. But I tried your "tools" anyway, and there is still no place to enter my personal HSA contribution. Here are the screens it took me to, directly after Gregory's questions (same darn questions every time):

Was Shelley covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) in 2025?

Do any of these situations apply to Shelley?
What type of HDHP coverage did Shelley have during 2025?
Let's review what type of coverage Shelley had in 2024
Your HSA Summary

That's it....Your software did not allow me to enter my personal HSA contributions. Where to I file formal complaints for this software? This is not acceptable and I'm so disgusted and super frustrated!

I misunderstood you because when you said today "I use Desktop/Windows", you made me think that you were using the Desktop product in Windows. Desktop refers to a TurboTax product that is installed on your PC. Online refers to using the browser based TurboTax software.

OK, let's do this. Please call the TurboTax support number, which is 1-800-4-INTUIT (1-800-446-8848). Why? Because with your permission, they can share your screen and see what you are actually seeing. We in the Community cannot see your private tax data, which understandably handicaps us.

I imagine that any charge is a function of if you paid for TurboTax or for any add-ons (like Max). And, we in the Community have little knowledge and no control over that part of the system anyway (our main mission is to answered tax/law oriented questions).

Listen, if you call the number and get asked to pay a fee (and decline), I have one more option - to delete all of your HSA data and start over. I don't know why your HSA interview experience is so different most other taxpayers, but the last resort of deleting your HSA data to start over has helped many.

If you want to do this, please see the following:

HSA RESET

***Reset***

1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)

2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen)

*** Desktop/Windows***

3. Go to the upper right and click on Forms, and

4. Select the desired form (1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)). Note the Delete Form button at the bottom of the form’s screen.

*** Desktop/Mac***

Hey BillM223, this was the best advice in attempt at resolving this issue. I did call the 1-800 help line and I shared my screen, and the guy was nice, but couldn't figure it out, and he told me to pay MAX to get expert help. This is not a tax issue, it's a software issue. I think your solution may work. I will give it a try and see what happens. I'm not going to delete everything, just W2 and HSA sections and walk through those pieces again to see if it allows me to enter my personal HSA contributions. Let's see! I'll get back to you. Thank you sooo much!

Hello BillM223, I went through the steps exactly as you told me... I deleted my W2 information, then did this ...

*** Online ***

3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form

4. delete form(s) 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)

then did steps 5 & 6:

5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually

6. go back and redo the entire HSA interview....

I did all the above steps. Still there was no place to enter personal HSA contributions.

Gosh darn, I thought this would work. There is a big glitch in this software and I am not getting the full benefit from my tax filing because of it.

Can you please escalate this to the software development team and to management? This is not fair.

Thank you for your efforts BillM223. I do appreciate your customer service and attempting to resolve my issue. But this is beyond tax-expert help. I think software engineering needs to get involved.

Please let me know if there is anything else Turbo Tax can do before I actually file my taxes.

Shelley Feist

Shelley, I deleted everything in my Online test (we usually use Desktop because we can see the forms), and I started to re-add stuff. I had tried in my usual Online test to duplicate your issue, as well as my Lead, and we got results different from yours. So I did the HSA Reset to delete all HSA data in the test (like I told you), and I started the test anew.

When I got to the HSA interview, I was surprised to see that "Let's enter Shelley's HSA contributions" was immediately after "What type of HDHP coverage did Blank have during 2025?"

To my astonishment, I reproduced something similar to what you saw...a missing screen. TurboTax never asked for your spouse's HSA contributions. By chance, were you the primary taxpayer (making you first?) There is nothing wrong with that, but in my test, Shelley is the spouse.

And if you look at the list of screens below, you will see that the husband's "Let's enter [name] HSA contributions" is missing...this is why I asked if you were the primary taxpayer.

What I saw:

Select the health-related accounts you had in 2025 (beginning of HSA interview)

Did you use your Health Savings Account (HSA) to pay for anything in 2025? (no, for the test)

Was (your husband) covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) in 2025? (yes)

Do any of these situations apply to (your husband)? (no)

What type of HDHP coverage did (your husband) have during 2025? (Family plan all year)

Let's enter Shelley's HSA contributions (surprise to me)

Was Shelley covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) in 2025? (yes)

Do any of these situations apply to Shelley? (no)

What type of HDHP coverage did Shelley have during 2025? (Family plan all year)

Your HSA Summary

Deduction for Shelley - $355!

OK, Shelley, this is what I need to make an investigation. In all of software, to address an issue, you have to be able to reproduce the issue, and I have been unable to until now.

Thanks for sticking with me.

BillM223, thank you so much for going through the tedious task of replicating my situation. To answer your question, I was NOT the primary taxpayer.... I don't think. Gregory, my husband, always did the taxes. He got sick a couple years ago and retired and started collecting Social Security on Disability. In Oct 2025 he passed away. Now I took over doing the taxes this year for 2025 (still filing joint-married). Last year, Greg had me logon and create the Turbo Tax in my email address and we walked through doing the 2024 taxes together. My husband wanted to teach me as he was suspecting that I will have to do taxes for the 2025 tax year. So his name always came first as though he was primary tax payer and I was always "the spouse", if that makes sense.... although I was still working full time.

Will you be able to claim the deduction for Shelley of $355 on my behalf?

Thank you so much BillM223. I work in IT so I understand what you are going through to re-create the problem. I truly appreciate you for sticking with me!!

Hi @BillM223 ,
I’m following up on our last conversation from two days ago. Could you please provide an update on the investigation into the software issue you reproduced?

I’ve kept my account inactive while waiting for your direction. My goal was to file before the end of February to take advantage of the early-bird discount, but this 7-day delay has made that difficult. Given the technical trouble I've experienced, would TurboTax be willing to waive the filing fee entirely as a courtesy?

Please let me know the next steps or if there is anything specific you need from my end.

Thank you,

Shelley

Unfortunately, we in the Community have no control over pricing or discounts. I assume that that would be handled by the telephone support group.

As for the investigation, we have little contact about that, either. The investigation has not yet reached the first step in the development side (that is, I know it's a problem, but do THEY know it's a problem?), so there is no fix date yet; however, at this point, it is very unlikely to be before the end of the month.

We have everything we need from you. Unfortunately, I am not in the position to answer your questions on the discount price or the fix date. Things have moved past this Community group.

May I express my condolences on your spouse. "Primary" just refers to the first name listed. So on your 2025 return, your spouse will still be the "primary". Don't change the order around because I have seen that to cause confusion at the IRS. Of course, in 2026 whether you file Single or Qualifying Surviving Spouse, yours will be the only name.

I am very glad that your spouse took the steps he did to bring you up to speed on this process. While I was doing "retail" tax work, I met too many recently widowed people who had no idea how to do the tax return or where any of the records were kept.
