Ref: page 41 of IRS Pub 590-A

Ref: page 19 of instruction for form 1099-R

This 1099-R represents a conversion form a traditional IRS to a Roth IRA

I have a 1099-R with Box 7 = 7 and IRA/SEP/Simple box checked

This seems correct based on option (b) "for a Roth conversion if at least 59 1/2"

But the ROTH contributions for 2025 are listed as excess since this particular distribution is not subtracted in line 2 of the MAGI for Roth IRA purposes worksheet.

I can't find the worksheet within desktop TurboTax deluxe.

Your help is appreciated.

TurboTax does this calculation behind the scenes and does not provide a way to view the calculation. For most people MAGI for the purpose of a Roth contribution is AGI minus the amount of any conversions to a Roth IRA. In less common cases there are a few additions to AGI. The entire calculation, which TurboTax implements correctly, is described here:

https://www.irs.gov/publications/p590a#en_US_2025_publink1000230985

For TurboTax to treat the code-7 distribution as a Roth conversion, you must indicate that you moved the money to another retirement account and that you converted the entire amount to Roth.

Yes, the challenge was where to "indicate that you moved the money to another retirement account and that you converted the entire amount to Roth."

I eventually found the spot by opening the specific 1099-R form within TT and scrolling way down the form and then verifying the amount in line B4 was correct and then I checked the box on line B5.

Once that change was made, the 'incorrectly identified' excess ROTH contributions went away.

Thanks!
