Hello,

I'm hoping this is an easy question - for the "Tell us how much you paid for energy-efficient improvement" how do I complete this portion of the form? We had 14 windows and 1 patior door installed in 2025. I have the costs broken down by each item but do I total all windows? And if I do - which box do I enter this information? Since there is only one door that's easy but there's four "expensive window" levels and an"All other windows/skylights". What does that mean? Help!

Yes, you would enter the total of all the energy star qualified windows in the box for windows. The maximum credit amount for windows (whether you install one or 10) is $600. If you are seeing separate boxes for all of the windows based on expensiveness, it will not make a difference since the credit is limited to 30% or $600 whichever is less.

The doors have a per door limit of $250 or a combined total of $500.

So if you installed 14 windows and one door your maximum credit is $850. Unlike some other residential products, you cannot include the labor for installation for doors and windows, just the cost of the doors and windows. The doors and windows must be energy star certified.

The Home Improvement Energy Efficient Credit

Worth up to 30% of costs with a maximum credit $2,000 for

Air source heat pumps

Heat Pump Water Heaters

Biomass Stoves or Boilers

Worth up to 30% of qualifying costs for a maximum combined total of $1,200 for the following:

Doors, Windows and Skylights

Insulation

Natural Gas, Oil Propane Water Heaters

Furnaces

Boilers

Central Air Conditioners

Electrical Panel Upgrades

Home Energy Audit (up to $150)

You can combine the $2,000 credit with the $1,200 credit for a total of $3,200

This credit is a nonrefundable credit. This means in order to claim the credit you must have a tax liability to offset it. If you do not have a tax liability equal to the credit the credit will be reduced to match your liability or down to $0.

use it or lose it credit. If you do have enough tax liability in the year you buy and install the item, you will not be able to carry the credit forward.

Doors, windows and insulation must be installed on your primary home.

The home must be in the US
