There is no such thing as "our HSA." HSAs belong to individuals. Because you are not an eligible individual, you are not permitted to make an HSA contribution. However, your wife being an eligible individual is permitted to make an HSA contribution to her HSA.

I have an HSA account but didn't have medical coverage during the year. My wife has a HDHP and covers her and my kids. We made a contribution on our HSA account that it is under the family limit, however when I enter the information is telling me that I over funded the HSA account. Need direction. Reading the instructions for 8889 I shouldn't have to withdraw the excess contribution or be taxed because my wife and the kids had coverage under her medical plan (family plan)

Were you covered under your family plan? If so, check your answer to the question What type of High Deductible Health Plan did you have on December 1, 2024? The answer should be None. The question is referring to the HDHP that you have under your name. If the answers aren't answered correctly, it'll say you have overfunded your account.

If you need to correct, return to the section, and answer the questions again. Refer to the TurboTax article Where do I enter Form 1099-SA? for navigation instructions.

If you still need help, please reply back.
