Please tell me the following:

1. Are you talking about the amount on your W-2 in box 12 with a code of W?

2. On the 8889, which line or lines are you referring to?

3. Did you make any "personal" HSA contributions (i.e., direct to the HSA custodian and not through your employer by payroll deduction)?

2. On the 8889, lines 9 and 11

3. No I did not make any "personal" HSA contributions. In the screen asking if I did I left the respective box empty. That same screen lists (without giving me a chance to edit it), that “my W-2 form box 12 lists an employer contribution” incorrect - lower than what I entered and appears in my W-2 boxes if I return to that entry screen!

Code DD in box 12 is for Health Insurance costs. You want to look at code W in box 12. Taking this information into consideration, you should see the correct amounts on form 8889. If not, please let us know.

My W-2 Box 12a, code DD had (and I entered in TurboTax) $ 1,476.00

Box 12c, code W had (and I entered in TurboTax) $ 625.00. The further page that listed (non-editable) what my “W-2 box 12 listed for employer made HSA contribution” has “$1,456” (TurboTax lists a value $20 lower than what I entered under 12 DD). Totally contradicting what you stated below.

Let me confirm that it does not matter which box 12 (a, b, c, or d) a number is in - what matters is the letter code.

For example, the letter DD and the dollar amount with it are the total amount that you and your employer paid towards the premium on your health insurance. It has nothing to do with your HSA.

As Catina said, the total amount that you and your employer contributed to your HSA is entered in Box 12 with a code of W.

If your screen in the HSA interview shows differently, I would have to ask you if you "imported" your W-2, rather than typing it in by hand. Sometimes it happens that the import process fails, because TurboTax did not build the data packet that represents your W-2.

The solution - and what I will ask you to do in any case - is to delete the imported W-2 from TurboTax, then re-enter your W-2 by hand. Then see if the code DD amount still shows up as employer contributions in the HSA interview.

Thank you for your response but no, I did not import the W-2 ( I only received it in hard copy); I carefully entered each box manually, and whenever I return to the W-2 section, the correct values from the W-2 show in boxes 12 for each code, adequately taken from the W-2. I also tried deleting and re-entering but that HSA page kept showing a value that does not show anywhere in my W-2…

So I think your problem is that the hsa is showing $831 MORE than your your W2 12 code W of 625. Not $20 lower than code DD. Look around for the 831 difference.

Check with your employer. Maybe they coded your W2 wrong. What are the Codes for W2 box 12?

Thank you. The issue is not related to what was reported in the W-2, but what TurboTax did with what was extracted from the W-2. If it says on a page that a value came from a particular box from the W-2 but such value does match any field from the W-2 I start worrying what other entries may have been processed incorrectly….
