The software is not asking for the over 66 years old medical expenses which are allowed in Oregon. I have asked this question once before, and your employee answered. I followed all the directions given more than once, but the software is still not asking me for the allowed medical expenses. I see no spot to enter them like I did the past few years. I even deleted my entire state return, started over, and I am never asked for the medical expenses. Please fix the program so I can finish my return.

The medical expense deduction for individuals 66 years old and older is available for taxpayers whose income is below:

- $100,000 if your filing status is single or married filing separately, or

- $200,000 if your filing status is married filing jointly, head of household, or qualifying widow/surviving spouse

If you are age 66 and older and your income is below the above threshold, TurboTax will ask you to enter your medical expenses. If you meet the requirements and still don't see the screen asking for your medical expenses, please review your personal profile in the My Info section to make sure your birthdate is reported properly. Then review your income to make sure it's not overstated.

If that didn't work, you will have to delete your state return in TurboTax Online and start it again. To do this:

Open your return.

Select State Taxes from Tax Home.

On the Status of your state returns screen

Select the trashcan icon next to your state

Select Delete

Select Start Over next to your state return on the Status of your state returns screen

After you restart it the program should ask for your medical expenses. Please reach out if your issue continues.

To claim this subtraction from income, you need to make sure you've entered your medical expenses in the federal portion of TurboTax Online. Even though you may not have enough allowable deductions to qualify to use itemized deductions on your federal return, entering your medical expenses in the federal section will populate your information on your Oregon return.

Then, to enter your Oregon medical subtraction in TurboTax Online:

Open TurboTax Online

Select Tax Home in the left pane

In the left pane, select the dropdown to the right of State Taxes

Select Review/Edit

Page through any screens until you get to Status of your state returns

Select Edit or Continue next to Oregon

Early in the interview, you should come to the Oregon Medical Expense Subtraction screen

Enter any medical expenses for yourself (and your spouse, if married -- you'll need to enter your expenses separately) in the appropriate box, then select Continue. DO NOT enter any medical expenses for any dependents you might be claiming.

If you are still unable to get the Oregon special subtraction, you can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information.  If you would like to do this, here are the instructions for TurboTax Online users:

Go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.

Then select Tools below Tax Tools.

A window will pop up which says Tools Center.

On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.

You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is.  Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.

Reply to this thread with your Token number. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.

If you are using TurboTax Desktop please comment back and I will give you those instructions.

First, you have to meet all the qualifications, or else TurboTax will not show you the screen for the Oregon Medical Expense Subtractions (nor should it).

These qualifications are:

You (or your spouse) must be the age of 66 before the end of the tax year (in the case of tax year 2025 - December 31, 2025)

Your federal AGI wasn’t more than $200,000 ($100,000 if your filing status is single or married filing separately)

You or your spouse has medical expenses (but does not apply to dependents)

If your return meets all three of these conditions, then TurboTax will show you on the screen "Here's the income that Oregon handles differently" the subheading, "Medical".

The line "Oregon Medical Expense Subtraction" is under Medical. Yes, it says "Medical Expense Subtraction", not "Special Oregon Medical Expense".

Clicking on Start (or whatever the button says) for "Oregon Medical Expense Subtraction" will show you a screen that will show the total of the medical expenses that you listed on the federal return, and ask you to allocate the expenses to each spouse, per Oregon law. You can read more about this on page 83 and following in Oregon Publication OR-17, which is an update to Oregon tax law.

Once you enter the allocated medical expenses, the special medical expenses will appear with code 351 in Section B on form OR-ASC.
