In all likelihood, one of you does not have an HSA, so you never went through the HSA interview to tell TurboTax that you had HDHP coverage, so TurboTax got confused and thought that maybe your coverage "lapsed". Sound familiar? If so, see the bulleted list.

If you or your spouse [whoever is NAME above] did not have an HSA in 2024, then answer NONE.
If you or your spouse had an HSA but did not contribute to an HSA in 2024, then answer NONE. (Remember that each of you can have an HSA).
If you or your spouse was covered by an HDHP policy for each month of 2024, then answer NONE.

That is, answer NONE to the question "What type of High Deductible Health Plan did [name] have on December 1, 2023", because the question doesn't apply to you.

My spouse was covered under a family plan (my employer) all year and did not have her own HSA. These answers all sound incorrect for the situation…

We are both covered by the same family plan and have a single HSA all in my name through my employer. I list myself as having HSA and covered by family plan, and her as no HSA (or others) but covered under the family plan.

Even though the answers do not sound like they are correct, this is the way the questions need to be answered in TurboTax to correctly report the situation you described.

Take a closer look at the question on the screen just prior to the one telling you there was a lapse in coverage.

If both you and your spouse are covered under the same family plan, then the person with the HDHP in their name will indicate they had a family plan. The other person will indicate they had None because the HDHP was not in their name.

Thanks for the clarification. This really should be stated in the question. It simply asks what type of plan she had, and does not specify what type of plan was in her name or simply asking if she had a separate plan. Surely this could be clarified to avoid confusion. Simply asking what plan she had is the same as asking what coverage she had.

That is incorrect. The prior question asked if they were covered by an HDHP, not if they were the subscriber.

That question that tripped you up is poorly worded, and given to many taxpayers who should never see it. In your case, just answer NONE, and you will skip by all the questions...

If the questions are skipped and if the "did you have HDHP" is answered as "NONE", then the person is not going to receive any benefit or credit or deduction for having the HDHP in the first place. This screwy part of Turbotax has been in place the last several years and needs to be fixed instead of hacked. And Turbotax, you need to stop popping up surveys while I'm trying to type a response. You're already not real popular.
