topic Foreign Healthcare plan deductible? in Deductions & credits

I am originally from Europe, and my home country provides healthcare coverage for citizens and their families residing abroad. I work and pay taxes in the United States, and I use my earnings to cover the monthly premium associated with this healthcare plan. Given that the plan is not directly provided by a U.S.-based company (though it collaborates with U.S.-based United Health), am I still eligible to deduct this expense from my taxes?

That being said I am also self- employed.

Thank you

I am assuming since it collaborates with United Health, that you have coverage while living in the US.

Yes, you would be able to deduct your health insurance premiums as self employed health insurance deduction as long as you are:

Self employed and have enough income to deduct it from

Are not eligible for employer-sponsored coverage for your own employer or spouses employer

Hi Vannesa,

Thank you for the reply.

So If I understand correctly if my husbands job offers healthcare through their business, but we decided to opt for a different option we aren't eligible to deduct this?

Thank you,

Yes, that is correct. You cannot claim the self-employed health insurance deduction if you are eligible to be covered under an employer sponsored plan. Being eligible is the thing that matters, not whether or not you take it.
