When listing mortgage interest received (on 1040 return) from son and daughter-in-law, is it necessary to list their social security numbers? A mortgage was created at the closing.

From prior reading of a posted answer, I it was stated that is not necessary to issue a 1098. Is this still the case?

The IRS will match interest claimed as a deduction to interest received as income.

Whoever receives home mortgage interest payments are required to claim the interest income.

You do not need to report the social security numbers of your son and daughter-in-law.

The Taxpayer claiming interest PAID as a deduction will need the Social Security number of the recipient of the interest payments.

Neither of you need to issue a 1098-INT since none of you are in the business of facilitating home loans.

Perhaps something was misunderstood. I did not pay the mortgage interest. I received the mortgage interest from my son and daughter-in-law.

No, if you are receiving interest, the payer's social security number does not need to be listed on your return.

If your son and daughter-in-law claim the interest as a deduction, they will list your social security number on their return so that the IRs can track their deduction to your income.
