You are required to notify the government through the form when you move out of the house and then it is no longer a part of your return. I am going to assume you moved out in 2023 if you are still concerned about the homebuyer credit.

If the house went to a spouse or ex-spouse, they are responsible for paying the credit.

If you sold the house to somebody- generic, you would need to repay the credit. See About Form 5405, Repayment of the First-Time Homebuyer Credit.

If for some reason you moved in a prior year and never filed for the move, you need to mark your answers as though it happened in 2023 in order to file this year. Then, you should really amend both years for things to be actually correct. Get through the filing of this year first.

To help you resolve this issue, you need to tell us:

Whether you actually received the homebuyer credit or not

If you did, whether you sold the home or still live in it

If you did, whether the loan has been paid off

Which answers in the homebuyer credit portion of the TurboTax interview you're unable to change

If you did receive the credit, go to the IRS's First-Time Homebuyer Credit Account Look-up page to check the payoff status of the credit.

Note that the IRS's records have not always been reliable regarding this credit.

You'll need to file a paper return this year if you can't resolve the issue to avoid the rejection.
