I did not claim one of my sons on my 2022 tax return because I thought his father had. He did not. It was my year to claim him. I have filled out an amended return and added my son as a dependent for 2022 and it says that he is a dependent but when I get to the child tax credits page, it says that I am already getting the $2,000 dollars for that year, but only for one son. It says that the son I tried to add is disqualified but does not give a reason. What does that mean?

We cannot see the return that you added your other son to. You cannot get the child tax credit for him if he was older than 16 at the end of 2022. How old was he? The tax law changed from tax year 2021 to 2022 and it went back to the "old" rules----so his age may disqualify him from CTC. Did it give you the $500 credit for other dependents?

He was 11 years old at the end of 2022. I did get the credit for my oldest son who was 16 at the end of 2022. When I add the 11 year old onto the amended tax return it comes up that he is disqualified. No one else claimed him in 2022.

I'm wondering if I should just hand fill the forms and send it in if turbotax is rejecting him?

@LVV1 Check the information you put in My Info for your younger child. Maybe you entered something incorrectly. Sometimes it helps to just delete the dependent and then re-enter them so that you go through the screens again.

Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number. Careful— do not say that your child’s SSN is not valid for employment. If your child was born in 2023 make sure you said he lived with you the whole year. There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support. Say NO to that question.
