I sold my US property in August 2022 and as part of my US taxes, paid capital gains tax on the sale of my home. I am a resident of the UK so the UK is my tax home; I had to pay the capital gains tax on my US home in my 2022-2023 UK taxes. Because of the double taxation agreement, am I able to get back at least part of what I paid to the US in my 2022 taxes by using the foreign tax credit section?

Also, I went into TurboTax and looked at my 2022 forms, but cannot figure out what portion of my tax paid is the capital gains tax. Could you point me to the line number that only represents the capital gains tax paid?

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Lori

if you were a UK resident for 2022, you will need to file for a Foreign Tax Credit on your UK return if it is available to you. For your FYI, the capital gains tax on the transaction is reported on line 15 on the Schedule D Tax Worksheet of your US return.

Hi,

Line 15 of Schedule D shows the net long term capital gain. I'm trying to figure out how much of the tax I paid for 2022 was for the capital gain. I've combed through the 2022 returns that I downloaded from TurboTax, but can't isolate just the capital gains tax I paid. I need the amount in order to request the Foreign Tax Credit on my UK taxes. I know I completed the Qualified Dividends and Capital Gain Tax Worksheet, but it isn't online with the rest of my tax forms. Thanks! And sorry to be such a pest!

The tax assessed and paid is located in your Schedule D tax worksheet. You don't have a copy of it because the final copy of the .pdf just contains the tax return and not all the workshseet. Here is how to get a copy of all your worksheet.

Open Turbo Tax online

Once you are logged in, go to the bottom of the page to the section that says Your tax returns & documents.

Select year 2022

Now select amend/change 2022

then go amend/ change return

Once your return is opened to be amended, go to tax tools on the left hand side of your screen and select print center

This will take you to the Turbo Tax Print Center, select Print, Save, or preview this year's return

Next screen asks you what you like to print, select 2022 return.

There will be a drop down choice and you select Include government and TurboTax worksheets (optional)

Now you can download/view the complete tax return and all the worksheets. There will be many but what is important is that the Schedule D tax worksheet will be included. After this step is complete, just log out of your return. You won't be amending anything but you used this technique just to view this worksheet.
