I reported my personal sale items from an Ebay 1099-K and noted sales were ALL loss. On Review before filing taxes Turbo Tax has error stating that $$ of loss cannot be larger than $$ reported in box 1. It was not LARGER, it was exactly the same. Why is Turbo tax telling me a larger number is there?

Did you select Personal item sales when you entered your 1099-K?

You may have added an entry to your IRS form 8949 / Schedule D to put it out of balance. Review the entries listed on IRS form 8949 / Schedule D to make sure that the income reported does not exceed the income reported on the IRS form 1099-K.

I entered an IRS form 1099-K and reported it as a personal item sale. Then I entered the IRS form 8949 / Schedule D Capital Gain and Loss entry. The 1099-K income equaled the IRS form 8949 / Schedule D and the entry was in balance.

Then I clicked Add another sale and entered another personal item sale for $100 income and $100 expense. I ran Review and received a message similar to the message that you received.

So the 1099-K / IRS form 8949 / Schedule D became out of balance by the $100.

I deleted the $100 entry that I added by clicking the delete trashcan to the right of the entry at the screen Review your xxx sales.

I ran Review and the error was gone.

@lulu61

My sales were Personal Item Sales and they were ALL at a loss. Turbo Tax doesn't take you to any further questions after entering they are loss. The Review shows a clip of the forms and shows what I entered from the 1099K and the same number for the loss, which makes sense, but then flags one can't be larger than the other. But staring at the screen, both numbers are exactly the same. Bug? I have deleted and redone several times with same result.

I think it could be that Turbo tax rounds up the number that I enter and then complains that rounded up number looks larger than the original entered number. I just re-entered it on form as the rounded up number and all is well. This is still a bug in Turbo Tax.

Possible Programming Bug in State of Indiana - IT-40 Tax Return (2022) regarding Tax Credit Computation

I believe I have found a programming bug in the 2022 State of Indiana Tax Return regarding tax credits.

Schedule 6 of the IT-40 is the worksheet for the tax credits. I had two (2) tax credits to report for 2022:

(1) Line 4 which a credit given for contributions made to a state university. I maximized the credit amount of $100 (max for filing a single return).

(2) I also received credit for contributions made to a Indiana CollegeChoice 529 Plan. I made a contribution for 2022 in the amount of $2,000, so the credit would be $400 ($2,000 x 20%= $400).

These two (2) credits of $500 exceeded my state adjusted gross income tax (line 8 of IT-40) which was $484.

Schedule 6 of the IT-40 states that the credits of Lines 4 through 7 cannot exceed the the state adjusted gross income tax stated on line 8 of IT-40. Here appears to be the problem that I'm experiencing. My two tax credits (i.e., college contribution credit and the 529 plan contribution credit) slightly exceeded the state adjusted gross income tax amount on Line 8 of IT-40. Since the total credits exceeded the state adjusted gross income tax; TurboTax used the college contribution credit ONLY and completely ignored ALL or any portion of the 529 contribution credit. It appears that the program should have allowed a portion of the 529 contribution credit up to, but not exceeding the amount of tax on line 8 of IT-40 (after subtracting the $100 for the college contribution credit). By ignoring all of the 529 tax credit as opposed to just the necessary portion needed; it amounted to an additional state tax owed of $384 in my given situation. For example, if I showed that I contributed $2,000, TurboTax stated that I still owed $444 in taxes. I found that if I entered a lesser 529 contribution amount of $1,922 ($1,922 x 20% tax credit= $384), TurboTax stated I owed only $60 in additional state income tax. Is this right? Thanks, Steve

It would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2022" file that is experiencing this issue. You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions for TurboTax Online:

From the left menu select Tax Tools.

Then select Tools below Tax Tools.

A window will pop up which says Tools Center.

On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.

You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is. Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.

Reply to this thread with your Token number. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

The instructions for TurboTax Download:

On your menu bar at the very top, click "Online"

Select "Send Tax File to Agent"

Click "Send"

The pop-up will have a token number

Reply to this thread with your Token number. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention with your detailed post. We are working on making this section more user-friendly. Once you get to the state review section you will get a warning and be able to make adjustments to get the credits up to state-adjusted gross income tax stated on line 8 of IT-40.
