Hi TT Community,

I thought I'd give this a try.

I paid a substantial amount of AMT in a prior year and as such have a very large carryover which can be used for claiming the AMT tax credit this year.

So, I followed all of the TurboTax's guidance, filling in correct amounts from the boxes in the Form 6251 and 8801 from my return last year, and I got a decent credit, although not as large as I thought.

Aside from why I didn't get to use as much of the credit as I had hoped, after the calculations were completed, TurboTax shows an amount I can carry over to next year and subsequent years, however this amount is less than the amount I had from last year minus the credit TurboTax calculated for this year.

Shouldn't the amount of the carryover for future years simply be the previous carryover minus the credit I received? Is there ever a time when your carryover for future years is reduced by more than the credit you receive in the current year?

Thanks!

Greg2023,

Don't know if you had already looked at:

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/irs-tax-return/alternative-minimum-tax-common-questions/L50YotKHP

but it does note that it is possible to lose some carryover. Beyond this, I would need to defer to someone with more insight into those 8801 details. If you were using the Desktop version of Premier, you could pull up that form immediately to check it over. With the online version, you would first need to pay the efile fee, then save and read the tax return PDF to review its entries. If changes need to be made, you are perfectly able to go back and make changes and then come back to the efile section to see exactly what has changed.

Thanks very much for the reply. No concern with paying the eFile first and then reviewing the actual forms, that makes sense. There was one area I found confusing and it was related to "exclusion items" on form 8801, but I think I am understanding it after further review.

-Greg
