I am getting no path to update medical expenses. From the Federal Taxes - Deductions and Credits screen, I click on update for Medical Expenses. I am taken to a screen that says:

This year, you get a tax break for your medical expenses

$

Medical Expense Deduction

We're sorry to hear you had medical expenses. Your medical expense deduction is $xxx.xx this year.

When I click on Back or Done, it takes me back to theFederal Taxes - Deductions and Credits screen. I never get a chance to enter or change anything.

MEDICAL EXPENSES

The medical expense deduction has to meet a rather large threshold before it can affect your return. The amount of medical (including dental, vision, etc.) expenses that will count toward itemization is the amount that is OVER 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. You should only enter the amount that you paid in 2022—do not include any amounts that were covered by insurance or that are still outstanding. Of course, your medical expenses plus your other itemized deductions still have to exceed your standard deduction before you will see a difference in your tax due or refund.

To enter your medical expenses go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Medical>Medical Expenses

2022 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS

SINGLE $12,950 (65 or older + $1750)

MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY $12,950 (65 or older + $1750)

MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $25,900 (65 or older + $1400 per spouse)

HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD $19,400 (65 or older +$1750)

I understand that the threshold is high. But I never get an option to enter anything. I don't even know where it is pulling the information from. But wherever it comes from, I get no option to update or change it.

@mmoch We cannot see your tax return or your screen. If you are getting Social Security benefits then the Medicare premiums paid from your SS flow from that SSA1099 in to the medical expense section automatically when you enter the SSA1099, so that is a possible source of the information that is there already.

You mean you cannot go to

That is correct - when I go:

Federal>Deductions and Credits>Medical>Medical Expenses>Update

There is one screen that has a pre-entered medical expense deduction that I cannot edit.

Also - We are getting Social Security (SSA-1099), but neither of us have any Medicare benefits (or premiums) at this time.
