topic IL: Education Credit/Divorced family in Deductions & credits

Location: Illinois

Family Status: Divorced, 2 children between (k-12), with each parent taking one child as a dependent.

When putting in the info via the easy guide, I am able to claim the full 750 credit. However, since this is per family not per child, I am trying to find a way to change the 750 credit to 375 that each of us can receive the proper credit. Is there a way to accomplish this?

Each parent claims one child and claims the education credit, if qualified, for that child on their individual returns. Each of you is a family independent of each other.

Thanks. That is what I thought as well, however last year the state felt otherwise and we were informed after the fact that we are only eligible for a total of 750, not 750 per child. I need to deep dive, but wanted to reach out for others thoughts.
