I paid back taxes for some property through a tax deed purchase. Can I claim the back taxes that I paid on my return? Thank you.

No, this was essentially your purchase price. Maintain your records for a future sale. In your situation the taxes were not imposed on you.

To be deductible, the tax must be imposed on you, and you must have paid it during your tax year.
