My W-2 shows $1,500 in box 12b W (Employer contributions). I have a 1099-SA box 1 Gross Distribution of $1,800. I had $100 per month taken out of my pay for my HSA. When I go through the Turbo Tax program it asks for the 1099-SA, then continues to a page asking about any personal contributions not made through my employer. My question is can I claim the $1,200 taken out of my pay in addition to theW-2 box 12b amount? Thanks

No, you cannot claim that amount as a personal contribution.

Even though the description for box 12 code W on your W-2 shows 'employer contribution', it also includes contributions that were made through payroll deductions from your income. These contributions were made with pre-tax money and will be automatically taken into account in the Health Savings Account (HSA) section of your return.

The input asking about any additional contributions that you made outside of your employer is referring to contributions made with after-tax money. Anything entered here would be reported as a deduction on your return. Including your payroll contributions here would be double-dipping.

Read the screen carefully ... it specifically tells you to NOT enter that amount again if it was already included in the W-2 box 12 code W ...
