I filed 2020 taxes initially without spreading my COVID Cares Act withdrawal into 3 years. This put us over the $150,000 threshold resulting in a small amount for the 3rd stimulus and not what we were truly eligible for. I had to amend my 2020 taxes to spread that care act withdrawal which put us below $150k, and the IRS rep said that we can claim the amount still owed to us for the recovery rebate for the 3rd stimulus since we were shorted.

We received 1008, we were owed 7000 for 3 dependents and 2 adults, so the rep said we can claim the difference that wasn't paid.

Turbotax is saying that we received everything, but that is based off of our return before I amended. How can I enter the amount still owed to us that the IRS rep said we can claim?

You are asked if you received a certain amount of stimulus. Answer NO.

Enter the amount of stimulus you did receive.

I would not have amended to spread it over 3 years. Now your 2021 income might be too high. You would have gotten the missing 3rd Stimulus amount on your 2021 return anyway. It's not based on 2020. They only used 2020 to send the checks out fast. So you should want your 2021 income to be lower.

To clarify it more. Amending your 2020 return will not increase the $1008 check you got. That is a done deal. 2020 is over. They will not use 2020 anymore to refigure it.

They will use your 2021 income to see if you get any remaining amount. So you might have shot yourself in the foot by moving more income to 2021.

It did though, we would have received the full 7000 if our income wasn't over 150k, that is the whole point of them letting you split and cares act over 3 years, so that your income isn't exceptionally high. I did my taxes in Jan and Turbo tax didn't give the option to split the care act up until Feb.

I do see now that it's accounting our 2021 income, which is BS, because we would have received the full 7k if I had split the care act on our 2020 return. Makes no sense at all.

Sorry you may have lost out. You can't go back and get it based on 2020 now. Found one. See IRS Question 2 here

https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/2021-recovery-rebate-credit-topic-c-eligibility-for-claiming-a-recovery-rebate-credit-on-a-2021-tax-return
