I need to correct the basis on Form 8606 for my 2018 and 2019 return. This does not affect or change anything on my 2018 or 2019 1040 forms or my return amount for those corresponding years.

Do I need to file a 1040x for either year, or can the amended 8606 forms for 2018 and 2019 be mailed in without a 1040x being filed since no changes are being made to the 1040, only the 8606 forms?

Can a simple letter explaining data correction suffice, mailing to the IRS address indicated for receipt of this years 1040 forms?

@Anonymous

Since there are no tax changes for 2018 and 2019, I suggest you update the basis on the current return to the correct basis. Make the adjustment to the basis and follow through and make a note for your 2021 tax return, for your information, how you re-calculated the basis should there be questions later. IRS is interested in correct taxes based on correct income information. You do not have to file an amended return, but make the corrections and be able to show how you calculated the adjustments if IRS ever ask for documentation of changes.

Write the letter, that you speak about, to the IRS as a explanation for the changes and keep it in your files.

Can a note/letter be included with filing online using Turbotax software?

@Anonymous Unfortunately, there is no way to add an extra note or attachment to to your return and expect to file electronically. You can however print and mail your return and include a note or detailed letter with your return.
