topic 1095-A Why does receiving or be able to receive unemployment affect your 2021 Federal Tax Return refund? in Deductions & credits

In the tax year 2021 Home & Biz has a question before you get to enter your 1095-a information. It asks a yes/no question on whether or not you received or can receive unemployment. I entered my 1095-A information first by answering Yes because I mis read the question, I had to enter 3 separate 1095-A because I made changes to my information throughout the year. Then after when I had the answer to the unemployment question be a Yes, it gave me back a much larger refund, but i never put in or answered anywhere else anything about unemployment. When I changed the answer to NO, it dramatically reduced my federal and NJ state refund. Also, I did the check and it was successful both ways, I think this might be a BUG/PROGRAMMING ERROR with the software. Has anyone else experienced this or know how to report this kind of potential problem to Turbo Tax?

For 2021 taxpayers who received unemployment do not have to pay back any premium tax credit.

thanks for the Information. If I filed the return online with Turbo Tax and have received a message that the IRS has accepted the return, how long should I wait to file an amended return and can I do that with the same turbo tax program and file that electronically.

You should wait until your return is processed and your tax liability settled. If the IRS didn’t adjust your return you can amend it on TurboTax and efile it. Amended returns can take many months to process.
