You should claim your real estate tax as a home office expense-TurboTax will do the math and carry over and populate your Schedule A, itemized deduction property tax.

So, once you have entered your home office property tax, do not enter it again.

I also had this happen to me and doubled my property tax as well. Actually I'm surprised that turbo tax did not pick this up as an error and allowed the system to double it. There should be some flag that says you can only enter one time, once as an itemized deduction and once as a home office expense. This seems incorrect to even allow this to happen.

TT should design the software to only require data to be entered once, i.e. "A". If data is computed because in another schedule "A" is used to determine a portion of "A" then the program should collect where "A" was entered and bring the value forward and used to compute the fraction that is required. The program should then adjust the figures where total amounts were entered and compute the new figures. If the user files the forms in reverse order or what ever order they so desire TT should be smart enough by checking applicable entries if boxes contain dollar amounts and warn the user that a possible double entry was made. A simpler way would be to provide instructions from when the user launches the program a logical flow diagram on how TT expects the user to fill out the forms. Yes it will make TT a bit more complicated for some people but errors must be avoided. I hope I got my point across.

If you are referring to excess real estate taxes questions in the home office deduction area, that is real estate taxes you paid but have not taken the deduction for elsewhere on your return.

For example, if you paid real estate taxes but are not itemizing deductions. You would answer "Yes" you have excess real estate taxes and put the amount of taxes you paid in the box.

Another example is, you itemized deductions, but your real estate tax deduction was limited. Any real estate taxes you paid above the limit that apply to your home office location would be entered as excess.

You should not enter anything under Property Tax in the Deductions and Credits section if you are entering it in your business with your home office. If you put a zero, the program will do the math and add it for you.

Enter your property tax in the Home Office and TurboTax will then automatically calculate how much of this taxes can be deducted for your home office. It will also add any remaining interest to Schedule A.
