You do not get the CTC for a child who will turn 18 in tax year 2021. You can only get the child tax credit for a child who will be YOUNGER than 18 at the end of 2021. You will get the $500 credit for other dependents for the older child.

Do not confuse child tax credit and earned income credit. Those are two separate child-related credits. The EIC is not limited to children under the age of 18. If you qualify for earned income credit you can still receive EIC for the college kid.

You can still claim him - the age is under 19 at the end of the year unless he is a full time student, then it is under age 24.

Let's not get confused about eligibility for the child tax credit as opposed to claiming a child as a dependent---they are not quite the same criteria. In order to get the child tax credit the child has to be younger than 18 at the end of 2021.

From the IRS:

Q C1. What is the amount of the Child Tax Credit for 2021? (added June 14, 2021)

A1. For tax year 2021, the Child Tax Credit is increased from $2,000 per qualifying child to:

$3,600 for children ages 5 and under at the end of 2021; and

$3,000 for children ages 6 through 17 at the end of 2021.

Note: The $500 nonrefundable Credit for Other Dependents amount has not changed.
