The $1200/2400 payments in the Spring of 202 are based on 2019 income, NOT 2020. There is debate about what the payments of $600 are based on, and some reporting that if your 2020 income is disqualifying but 2019 was not, you should delay filing. Right now, wondering if I should have stuck with Drake.
Tue, 09 Feb 2021 14:38:47 GMT https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-credits-deductions/discussion/re-turbo-tax-not-calculating-stimulus-correctly/01/1895362#M178821 JeffP_MA 2021-02-09T14:38:47Z Re: Turbo tax Not calculating stimulus correctly https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-credits-deductions/discussion/re-turbo-tax-not-calculating-stimulus-correctly/01/1895389#M178826
<LI-USER uid="3163252"></LI-USER> The stimulus payments are an advance tax credit based on the 2020 federal tax return.

The Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet used by TurboTax and any other tax preparation software is the same worksheet as required by the IRS to calculate the tax credit. We got the first stimulus payment before we filed our 2019 return and therefore it was based on our 2018 AGI The second stimulus, of course, was based on my 2019 AGI. For both tax years we were over 150K threshold but only in 2018 was the AGI low enough to require a proration of the stimulus amount. The thing that bothers me is I added money to both my stimulus payments on my 1040 and that was advice I was given from a tax expert with turbo tax and so that would be the only way to explain why I would say I got the payments when in reality I didn't, which in turn is the truth. Line 30 cannot be negative

IRS: what happens if we make a mistake and don't send out money we should have?

Congress: it doesn't matter. Remember what we stated: everything is really based on the 2020 tax return. There is no such thing as a 'mistake' for sending out too little because the real payment is based on the 2020 tax return in any event.

IRS: Brilliant and Yes Sir, we will send out the checks.

Then in December, 2020

Congress: do it again, same rules but use $600

hope that helps!
Fri, 16 Apr 2021 21:52:49 GMT https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-credits-deductions/discussion/re-turbo-tax-not-calculating-stimulus-correctly/01/2211668#M206865 NCperson 2021-04-16T21:52:49Z Re: Turbo tax Not calculating stimulus correctly https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-credits-deductions/discussion/re-turbo-tax-not-calculating-stimulus-correctly/01/2211679#M206868
<LI-USER uid="4087597"></LI-USER> - you can't and should not over ride the calculations.

It will invalidate the TT guarentee.

The IRS will just correct it back to the correct calculation.]

why would you want to override it?
Fri, 16 Apr 2021 21:56:32 GMT https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-credits-deductions/discussion/re-turbo-tax-not-calculating-stimulus-correctly/01/2211679#M206868 NCperson 2021-04-16T21:56:32Z Re: Turbo tax Not calculating stimulus correctly https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-credits-deductions/discussion/re-turbo-tax-not-calculating-stimulus-correctly/01/2212627#M206923
I don't believe that the irs is cross checking every return for the right stimulus amounts they gave out because like I said in my other post, I only received stimulus money for myself the first 2 rounds but put in the extra amounts for my son through guidance from turbo tax and they accepted my return and sent out my return in 2 weeks.
Please verify that both of your dependents are under age 17 on your 2020 tax return and your income is showing below $150,000. The correct amount of Recovery Rebate Credit is based on the information in your 2020 return only. The amounts you received as stated in your post would be correct if one of your dependents turned age 17 in 2020.

Here is a link that will help explain the Recovery Rebate Credit.

But turbotax is saying I got what I should have and irs told me I didnt and put what I'm missing on line 30 on a 1040 form. Turbotax cant figure out how to get me to the form because its saying I got what I should have even though irs told me I didnt so I will with taxes but now what I dont know how to put it in

Do you have any suggestions for this situation: Filing with two dependents this year, but only had one last year due to a custody agreement with the other parent. TurboTax says I am owed $1100 for my second dependent but that payment went to the other parent. Is there a way to override this so that I don't get sent money that I have to repay with penalties later?

Yes I know I put in the amount I received but because they went off my 2018 taxes they didn't give me the right amount my son was born October 2019. So I should be getting $1,100 for him but cant because its saying that I received the right amount when even the IRS is saying I didnt. And no one that i have talked to on this turbotax knows how to do it i guess.

Yes it definitely is turbotax issue because I just tried in another tax website and had no problem getting the form and seeing it. But not here can't see/get the form. And of course the people that call ya are worthless and say oh do this do that and still NOTHING! I have checked and checked and nothing. So its definitely turbotax.

This is my situation, too. MFJ with 2019 AGI under threshold, never received either of the $1200 stimulus checks, DID receive the 2 @ $600 within a week or 2 of law passage. Had to search for Recov Rebate Cr form, had to override everything and the form still has an un-deletable Note at the Bottom referring to our 2020 AGI (to high to qualify). Overriding seems to work, but shouldn't need to. I didn't use TurboTax in 2019 (used Drake), and spent literally over an hour with TT Support whose only ultimate advice was to wait until 2/12, when the "final" Turbotax update will come out and this should be fixed.

We're having a problem also but with a different twist on the credit calculation. Apparently, TT is using 2018 AGI to calculate that a prorated amount should have been paid for the second stimulus. How do we get rid of the erroneous credit that TT is showing on our 2020 return?

The Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return is based only on the information in your 2020 tax return. The AGI on your 2020 tax return is correctly being used for the calculations. If your 2020 AGI is between $150,000 and $200,000, the stimulus amounts for both rounds one and two are using the same proration (2020 AGI). That prorated amount is then reduced by any payments you actually received in rounds one and/or two to arrive at the credit due to you and added to your 2020 tax return.

The prior year AGIs were only used for rounds one and two because those were the returns available; they were actually advances to the Recovery Rebate Credit. The stimulus payments were always meant to be based on 2020 tax returns.

Here is a link with more information on the Recovery Rebate Credit.

So technically we were supposed to put both payments in there even if the second stimulus was not received until 2021?

I did not put my second stimulus in there thinking I would have to put it in when I file next year. The IRS said I had calculated incorrectly, amended my return by the credit the software added into my return and changed my refund amount. I am okay with this, but now I have not received the stimulus when my bank has already received their funds. So now, I guess I have been flagged by IRS and won’t receive the stimulus. 😕

so one of two things is going to occur for the 3rd stimulus for the new born

1) the IRS will process your 2020 return and notice the newborn and issue the $1400 shortly thereafter

2) you don't receive the $1400 this year and will see the $1400 on Line 30 on the 2021 tax return.

either way, you are entitled to the money, it's just an unknown how you will receive it....every parent with a newborn in 2020 that is filing now is in the same boat, so it's a pretty big boat!

the 3rd stimulus is NOT part of the 2020 tax return, so you won't see it anywhere on this year's return.

I wish I would have known that and that I wasn't given the wrong advice by a turbo tax expert when I filed my taxes February 10th 2020.

My ex wife claimed my son in 2019 and got both stimulus checks for him but I claimed him in 2020 and when I was doing my taxes on turbotax.com I was confused as to why I was getting the 1,100 credit so I called a turbo tax expert and they told me to add my sons stimulus money to each of my payments and so I did and now I find out that I shouldn't have done that (which I later read on the irs website) and that I should have put the correct information in there. Now what do I do because if I amend my taxes it looks like I lied to them. Please someone help me with this situation. Thank you 😊

I appreciate your help with this. The thing that bothers me is I added money to both my stimulus payments on my 1040 and that was advice I was given from a tax expert with turbo tax and so that would be the only way to explain why I would say I got the payments when in reality I didn't, which in turn is the truth. I called a turbo tax expert 2 times since finding this out and one said that it was the right thing to do another wasn't sure and the 3ed put me on hold and never came back to the call. I have used turbo tax for years now and never a problem and yes this is all new I get that but if the irs website issues rules for taxes online I would think the tax experts would learn about so they could be of better help to their customers. I've never amended my taxes before so I pray I get it right.

Yes I already did my taxes and got my return back...

This is right out of the 1040 instructions. I clearly states rounds 1 and 2 of the economic impact payments were based off of 2018 or 2019 income. The third round called the recovery rebate credit payment is based off the 2020 income. So TT is calculating incorrectly, and needs a fix.

Line 30
Recovery Rebate Credit
The recovery rebate credit was paid out
to eligible individuals in two rounds of
advance payments called economic impact payments. The economic impact
payments were based on your 2018 or
2019 tax year information.
Bobby - I will add to the crowd.... the calculations are based on the 2020 tax return based on your income, filing status and dependents under the age of 17 LESS whatever you received for the first two stimulus payments, but not less than zero. that results ends up on Line 30

what was on the 2018 and 2019 tax returns doesn't matter as that was just used as an estimate to get money to everyone.

Similarly, while the 3rd stimulus is based on the 2020 tax return (or 2019), what will matter is the 2021 tax return for income, filing status and dependents (age won't matter) LESS what you received for the 3rd stimulus, but not less than zero. that results ends up on Line 30

Here's another twist: What if you qualified for the stimulus based on 2019 AGI but not 2020 and filed 2019 taxes on time but IRS never processed them or lost them (cashed check so know they received them). Never received $600 second stimulus check or third $1400 check and unable to claim back $600 on 2020 taxes since Rebate Recovery bases off of 2020 income. Only way to do this is to override form calculations. Any suggestions or is it just bad luck and timing?

@denmar0404 You have a couple of issues.

2019 taxes, you said check cashed but no stimulus received. That implies that you mailed your taxes, they cashed the check and have not processed the 2019 return in time for you to qualify for the second stimulus

2020 taxes and income used to determine if you qualify for missed stimulus. If your income is too high in 2020, you do not get the missed stimulus.

It does no good to try and override and change what is not allowed, The IRS cross checks every return for stimulus received, income, etc. You will not get what you are not entitled to, regardless of what you do to the forms. <LI-USER uid="4087597" login="bobbyBE"></LI-USER>

Thanks for your response but not understanding why I am not entitled to the stimulus. It was only because the IRS was slow in processing that I didn’t. If my return was processed in a timely manner I would have received it. Are you saying I am totally out of luck?

On another thread I tried to bring some clarity to this in a 'tongue in cheek' method.... hopefully this will explain what really occurred and answer your question.

I agree that it can be confusing and befuddling but Congress and the IRS had to do this in a rush - some "won" and some 'lost" because of the rush.

The critical point is everything is based on the 2020 tax return, regardless of who got what and who received a check they should not have and who didn't receive a check they thought they should have (your case). that is the way the law was passed is the only true explanation.

the conversation in March, 2020 between Congress and the IRS went something like this:

Congress: Send out $1200 to every taxpayer and base the calculation on the 2020 tax return

IRS: but 2020 is not over yet, we don’t know what people will submit on their 2020 tax returns

Congress: then use their 2019 tax return (and if that is not available use 2018) to determine the stimulus payments

IRS: what happens if we send out this money and when we analyze the 2020 tax return we realize we sent too much?

Congress: not to worry we will write the law so that if anyone gets more money than their 2020 tax return says they are entitled to, they won’t have to return it!

Had they checked it they would have seem the mistake or maybe they left it that way so they wouldn't have to give me the extra 1,100 I'm entitled to.

I still haven't amended my return yet. Not totally sure how to do it and if the irs is going to accept it since I gave them wrong amounts which I added money so that doesn't look good on my end.

Any advice would be appreciated

Yes, that is correct. I was given misg information on how to go about the rebate when it came to claiming my son this year. Now I went to amend my taxes turbo tax is still not allowing me (or anyone) to do this yet. They still have the same post saying they are waiting for the irs for updates and said it would be a week and that was 2 weeks ago. Patience is a virtue for sure when it comes to taxes. Lol

I don't think they keep up with all of the tax laws as they come out because I think this one is very significant because it involves 1,100 credit. Why would the irs put this on their website if it weren't correct? I am actually going to wait a few weeks before I send it in because I received unemployment and paid in taxes and I filed before thay became law and received my refund so I don't want that refund to be delayed. Now with all that said, this mistake was made due to the advice of turbotax do you think that I could lose my guarantee for a employees giving me bad advice?

The IRS is right. If you are claiming a child on your 2020 return you can get both the 500+600 amounts for him even if you ex got the payments based on her 2019 return. That is a loophole in the IRS. You can both get the Stimulus payments.

You should not need to override your tax return. If should automatically give it to you if you qualify. It will be on line 30. Unless you don't qualify for another reason like if he turned 17 in 2020 or your income is too high.

Both the IRS and TurboTax are not calculating my stimulus correctly. I filed my 2019 taxes as MFJ and my AGI was less than $150,000. I have 3 dependents (ages 3-10), and that is how it is entered in TurboTax. With 2 adults and 3 dependents I should have received $3,900 for the 1st stimulus and $3,000 for the 2nd, but I received $3,400 for the 1st and $2,400 for the 2nd (one dependent short each time), and that is what TurboTax is saying that I should receive. I clearly have 3 dependents entered . What am I missing?

I amended my return for the same reason and you won't get to that part til you go through your 1040x on turbotax. Just continue through it and it will be towards the end of your amended return. You should be able to change your amounts where you had put them on your original return. Don't forget to write the reason for amending your taxes also.

I have 2 daughters. One is 4 years old, born in 2017 and the other is less than one but born in 2020. I should have received additional stimulus for them as both of them were born in 2020 or before, but I didn't have a social security number for them. I have them now and should be able to get the funds that weren't available to me previously, but TT is saying that I've gotten all the stimulus that I qualify for. I don't make more than 75,000 a year. Not even close.
