My health insurance premium is deducted pre-taxed from my monthly pension. When filling out turbo tax, it adds it to my medical expenses on schedule A. With my other medical expenses added to the health insurance premium, I qualify for a deduction in medical expenses, but I technically do not qualify for the deduction because my health insurance premium is pre-taxed.

How do I eliminate the health insurance premium from my medical expenses on schedule A?

You can go back through the medical expenses section and delete those premiums if you previously entered them. Search for medical expenses and then use the Jump to medical expenses link to go back through the entries.

If the insurance expense was entered through a W-2 or 1099-R, TurboTax won't put those amounts on Schedule A unless they are deductible. And sometimes there is a state deduction available when there is no federal deduction available. To verify the medical expenses that TurboTax is using on your Schedule A, view the Medical Expenses Worksheet. You can do this using Forms Mode (click on Forms in the upper right corner) if using the desktop software. If using the Online software, you can save a full copy (that includes all worksheets) to view the details of Schedule A.

Thanks for responding. When entering the info from the 1099-R form from my employer, Turbo Tax asks you how much from the pension was paid for the health insurance premium. I entered the total annual amount. It does not asks you if it was pre-taxed or not. When you enter that amount, it automatically enters it under Medical Expenses of Schedule A minus 3,000 because of being a public safety officer. I can not delete it from "Medical Expenses" without issues arising with the inputs or deletions.

Note that i do not qualify for medical expenses with the 7.5% of my income being subtracted from the total medical expenses minus the health insurance premium anyway, so I did not add anymore out of pocket expenses just to have a zero amount under medical expenses when i complete Schedule A.
