I'm using Premier online, and have followed the instructions to switch from itemized deduction to standard in the Federal "Deductions

If your system is not fully updating, try closing the program and the browser completely. Re-open using an incognito Chrome browser.

If TurboTax has calculated one method, the standard deduction, as preferred, the main reason to not claim the standard deduction would be because the married filing separate spouse claimed itemized deductions and the type of deduction must be the same between the two spouses. Otherwise, taking the TurboTax recommendation will maximize your refund.

Hi Kathryn,

Thanks for the response! I tried closing everything and re-opening in incognito, but encountered the same issue. I think it might be a problem with my TurboTax account -- I was asked to log in because I've used TurboTax previous years as well.

The TurboTax recommendation was for itemized deductions -- that's why I'm finding this so troublesome, unfortunately.

TurboTax is aware of this issue:

The reason this information seems conflicting is because of the Charitable Contribution Credit with the maximum limit of three hundred dollars ($300). If the base Itemized Deduction appears to be the best choice, the program will suggest it, but you might notice that the Standard Deduction is still being applied. The reason the standard Deduction is being pushed, even after selecting Itemized, is because the $300 Charitable Donation Credit is being applied to the base amount of the Standard Deduction and making it worth more than the Itemized. This simply isn't being reflected on the amount when choosing Standard or Itemized.
