Sales tax is an itemized deduction.

So you have to itemize to claim it. Which means you have to exceed the standard deduction of $6,300 for single ($12,600 for Married filing Joint).

Taking sales tax deduction is common in States with no income tax. You get a base rate deduction based o where you live, family size and income, then you also can add large purchases such as the truck.

To enter Sales Tax

Click on Federal Taxes

Click on Deductions and Credits

Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)

      Estimates and other Taxes Paid

On Sales Tax, click on the start or update button

First it will compute the General Sales Tax deduction and then it will ask for large purchases such as the truck.
