If you live in Canada, you need to choose Foreign or U.S. possession for your state of residence.

The purpose of the question is to find out which state can charge you income tax, and whether you are a current resident of that state. Since you currently live in Canada, the program will be able to verify that you were only a part-year resident of South Carolina.

When you get to your current mailing address, you will have another opportunity to tell the program that you are living in a foreign country, so it won't ask you about your state and zip code. There is a fair amount of redundancy built into the program to help check the consistency of your answers to help you avoid mistakes.

In My Info, TurboTax will ask for Your state of residence (on December 31, 2022). If you live in a foreign country, choose the bottom selection Foreign or U.S. Possession.

In the mailing address, in Type of mailing address, choose Foreign country to enter a foreign address.

If you are not a U.S. citizen or resident alien, you may not be able to use TurboTax.

TurboTax does not prepare a Form 1040NR nonresident return.

You may wish to talk to TurboTax foreign tax partner Sprintax.com about your filing status.

If you do not live in the continental US, Alaska, or Hawaii, then you live in a foreign or US possession.

Canada or Mexico would be foreign.

A location such as Guam would be a U.S. possession.

Hi! I am considered a US resident for tax purposes since I've been on J1 visas for a while throughout the previous years (Camp Counselor) I live in Mexico so should I also pick the "Foreing or US possesion" option? I'm confused cos I don't know where should I add Minnesota since thats the state where I worked last year. Thanks!

If you lived on Mexico at the end of last year you would select "Foreign or US possession." and you would then file MN as a Part year/Nonresident state.

Thank you so much! I have another question, sorry this process has been quite confusing for me since is my first time filling as an US resident, on the mailing address section can I add the address I had when I worked back in Minnesota? this because I'll be going back to the same place for this summer and I'd like to receive my refund while there or should I add my permanent address in Mexico in the case it would bring issues with the IRS. Thank you so much!

Yes, you may add the address in Minnesota if this is a good mailing address for you.
