I have 2 school aged dependents who have part time jobs and they each make about $6000 per year …

Therefore, I believe that they are not required to file their taxes…correct??

When filling out my 1095a section in turbo tax , it says that I must count the income from dependents that are required to file a tax form…

My question is :

Can I NOT count their income for the 1095a section and get a bigger return ( since they aren’t required to file their taxes)?? But also, can I file their taxes to get their small refunds as well?? Or Do I have to do one or the other and not both??

Yes, you are not required to claim your dependents. But you may not have to exclude them.

Household income.

For purposes of the PTC, household income is the modified adjusted gross income (modified AGI) of you and your spouse (if filing a joint return) (see Line 2a, later) plus the modified AGI of each individual whom you claim as a dependent and who is required to file an income tax return because his or her income meets the income tax return filing threshold (see Line 2b, later). Household income does not include the modified AGI of those individuals whom you claim as dependents and who are filing a 2020 return only to claim a refund of withheld income tax or estimated tax.

Form 8962

If all of the kids income (around $6000) is from their jobs (or self employment), NO, don't add their income on the 1095-A screens.

Yes, they can still file their tax returns to get a refund of income tax that was withheld.

However, if they have more than $350 of non-job income (unemployment compensation, interest, capital gains, etc.), that may change things and we would need to know more details about the amount of non-job income.
