When you write amounts of money----put the dollar sign first before the numbers.

$465, $565, etc.

You have to tell us what state. Go by the actual return. Print out your return. What line # and amounts.

I don't know if anyone will be able to explain it. It's hard without being able to see your tax return. But to have any hope of explaining it you have to give information that's a lot more specific, as xmasbaby0 and VolvoGirl have said.

What state is it? Every state has different forms and rules.

What year is it for?

Give specific form and line numbers, and exact amounts.

The tag below your question says you are using TurboTax Online. If that's true, it's for 2020. But I don't think any of the state programs for 2020 are available yet. If you somehow were able to access state software for 2020, it's just a very preliminary rough draft, with several updates needed before it's ready for filing. If you're looking at a state tax return for 2020, I suggest that you just put it aside for now. Come back at the end of January and see if it still has the same problem.

Go to the following link to see a list of estimated dates when state forms are expected to be available.

State forms availability table for TurboTax individual (personal) tax products

Did you get the original $960 refund from the first return? Then when you are amending you should have only got a $112 refund. So you owe the difference back. If you didn't get the first 960 refund you need to change that line or wait for the original return to finish processing and you get it.

So let me get this right, because I'm clueless when it comes to all this. I'm amending my taxes because I accidentally clicked I can be claimed as a dependent when filing. After Amending that to I can't be claimed, I should've gotten only $112 Federal refund originally? So I owe Illinois $848?

@cylepyles-gmail- wrote:

Well, yes. That's what it's saying. But that doesn't seem right. It seems like you should be entitled to a larger refund when you can't be claimed, not a smaller refund. Something else must have changed, possibly by accident, but we can't tell what it is without seeing your original return. Can you post the two pages of the original IL-1040, with the personal information cut off, like you did with the IL-1040-X? But do not cut off lines B, C, and D at the top of page 1.

Is your filing status Single? Between the IL-1040 and the IL-1040-X, did anything change on lines 1 through 28? Did anything change on lines B, C, or D (C, D, or E on the IL-1040-X) besides the checkbox for whether you can be claimed as a dependent?

There's something else that doesn't look right. It doesn't explain the whole problem, but I want to try to understand everything that's going on. The amended return (line 33) says that the refund on your original return was $960. But it also says (on line 29) that you paid $12 with the original return or after filing. Why did you make a payment if you were getting a refund? Where did that $12 come from? Does your original IL-1040 have $960 on line 35? Did you receive that refund?

It's very late now. I'm an hour east of you. I'm going to sleep now. We'll continue this discussion tomorrow (Tuesday).

The federal return was $960, on the original return I owed $12 to IL state, which it wouldn't let me ever pay. Yeah, I did get the $960 like maybe 2 weeks after I filed the original return.

Sorry, I accidentally pasted the wrong text. Ignore the previous reply that was emailed to you. Here's the reply I meant to post.

You're mixing up the federal and state tax returns. Somehow your $960 federal refund got onto your state amended return. It doesn't belong there. That's why your Illinois amended return is wrong.

I don't have the Illinois software to be able to see how you might have entered that in the state amended return. I'm just looking at the Illinois forms. You have to find where you entered that $960 in the Illinois amended return and get it out of there. Then your amended return should be correct. You might have misunderstood something when it asked you about the refund from your original return. You do not enter your federal refund in the state amended return. Federal and state are separate.

Switch to the forms mode and override the $960 to zero ... don't know how the federal 1040 amount got to the IL-1040X but it doesn't belong... fix that and the form will recalculate properly and you will have a refund of $112.
