I filed taxes claimed head of household. Have 1 dependent my son. I claimed Earned Income shouldn't have and when I claimed child tax credit I checked other dependent box instead. I got a form 8862 from IRS sent it back. And haven't heard back yet. Was wondering what I need to do now.

You cannot do anything right now except wait for the IRS to finish processing the return you filed, even if it has mistakes. If you need to amend, you do that AFTER the IRS has fully processed the original return, not before and not while they are still working on the one you submitted to them.

Not sure what errors--if any--you made. If you are a single custodial parent with one dependent child then filing as Head of Household would have been okay. If your child was over the age of 16 then you could not get child tax credit--you would have gotten the credit for other dependents for a child who was over 16. Or if your child does not have a Social Security number and only has a ITIN, you could only get the credit for other dependents. The software automatically enters the child tax credit if you qualify. Did you answer a question incorrectly about how long the child lived with you? If you answered incorrectly, that could have been why you did not get the child tax credit.

If you qualify for earned income credit, the software adds it to your refund automatically.

Did you mess up somehow and claim the child incorrectly because you are not the custodial parent? If you are not the custodial parent (the parent the child lived with for at least 183 nights) that might be the issue. Only the custodial parent can file as Head of Household and get the earned income credit. The non-custodial gets the child tax credit, but must say they have a signed form 8332. Do you have a signed form 8332 with the other parent?

If you had to mail in the 8862, the IRS is taking a very long time to process any mailed returns or forms. Mailed returns piled up in trailers for months and they are now working on over 11 million pieces of mail. So you may just have to wait for them to dig through and process the form 8862 you sent.

For now--you wait and check periodically on the IRS web site. The IRS is your only source of information. No updates are given to TurboTax.

To check on regular tax refund status via automated phone, call 800-829-1954. (This line has no information on Economic Impact Payments.)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer. Many refunds are taking longer during the pandemic.

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount (line 20 of your Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

To track your state refund:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899433-how-do-i-track-my-state-refund

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1901548-why-do-some-refunds-take-longer-than-others

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

Sounds like you received a request like this "If your Letter 12C indicates that Form 8962, Premium Tax Credit was missing and not attached to your return, you will need to send the completed Form 8962 to the IRS. You do NOT need to amend your return, so there is no need to submit Form 1040-X, Amended Return."

If so, this means that IRS needs the form 8962 to verify the information on the Form 1095A. If you mailed that in to IRS as requested, most likely that resolved your issue.

Remember, IRS shut down March 2020 just like everyone else. Some of those documents, because they were paper, may not have been processed yet. The only thing you can do is wait.
