Form 8812 is for the additional child tax credit. That amount would be listed on line 18(b) of your form 1040. I suggest you look on that line and see if you have an additional child tax credit listed on your tax return. If so, then the IRS just wants the form 8812 that supports that number. It should be included in the PDF copy of your tax return.

What form are you looking at? Line 18b on the 2019 1040 (see here) is indeed the additional child tax credit.

To get this credit (if you are eligible), do a Search (upper right) for child tax credit and click on the jump-to link. Go through this section and both the Child Tax Credit and the Additional Child Tax Credit will be added, if you are eligible.

It is not a defect for tax year 2021.

There are people who have received Advance Child Tax Credit Payments but are no longer qualified for the 2021 Child Tax Credit and may need to repay those payments. The IRS wants to be sure Taxpayers who received those payments report that information on their 2021 tax Year return. If they no longer have dependents, the question would never come up.

TurboTax incorporated the question in the Step-by-Step interview in the Online programs, and implemented Form 8812 in the Desktop programs since some Taxpayers are able to navigate through Forms rather than Step-by-Step.

It may seem like an inconvenience, but considering the cost of people "forgetting" to report the advance payments and the IRS having to track them down, it was decided that asking about form 8812 when no dependents are listed was the smarter route.

I was a dependent on my parents return in 2020. This is the first return I am completing as not being a dependent and I have noted when asked that I have no dependents and I personally have never received any Advance Child Tax Credit Payments. Form 8812 is asking how much I received on letter 6419 and I have never received letter 6419. Placing a zero on Form 8812 seems to be the only way the TurboTax software will let me proceed.

Assuming you do not have any dependent children -

Everyone is being asked this question since TurboTax does not know if the user was one who received these advances from the IRS in 2021.

Enter a 0 (zero) when asked to enter a number on the Schedule 8812. This will correct the issue and remove the Schedule 8812 from your tax return so that you can file the return.

I have the same issue - No children, but TurboTax Deluxe Smart Check is stating I need to enter Advance Payments received in Schedule 8812. This Schedule does not apply to me and I did not enter any information regarding Dependents or Children in my return. I did see one User suggested going to Tools to delete Schedule 8812, but I can not locate Tools. TurboTax Experts, please advise how to correct/delete this form so I can proceed with my taxes.
