My husband and I donated our RMD 2019 funds to our grandaughters college fund College Invest 529 Colorado. The forms let us indicate we used the funds as a charitable donation but did not ask where it was donated. Is that information needed?

Yes. When deducting charitable contributions, you must indicate the qualified organization that received the donation in order to take the deduction.

Doubtful you will be able to convince the IRS that your granddaughter's college fund is a charity. Gifts to individuals are just that---gifts. They are not deductible.

Some states allow a state deduction for money you put into a 529 plan.

But entering the 529 contribution from your RMD as a charitable donation is really shaky.
