I cannot replicate a limitation in my TurboTax, based on the information you provided. But, I don't have all the numbers from your 1098 forms. Here are some suggestions to help resolve or at least diagnose the issue.

Firstly, go back through the questions and check the following:

The boxes in TurboTax match the boxes on your actual 1098 forms.

For the refinance loan, did you designate that it was a refinanced loan?

Did you take out any cash as a part of the refinance? (If so, some of your interest will not be allowed as a deduction)

If you look at your Schedule A is the mortgage interest deduction actually being limited instead of the full amount?

Once you've confirmed that all the questions are answered correctly, if you still have a limitation issue, then:

Because you mentioned the Tax & Int Wks, I am assuming you are using the TurboTax Download/CD version. If so, make sure you have installed the most current update.

Take a look in "Forms Mode" at the Tax & Int Wks. Near the "bottom" there is a Mortgage Interest Limited Smart Worksheet in the Interest Deductions section. If the "Does your mortgage interest need to be limited" question was for some reason checked "Yes" in error, you may need to manually check "No" instead. That could clear up any limitation message you are getting.

I'm having the same problem. I have three 1098'. One is the original mortgage, the second from a refinance, the third from a transfer of the mortgage. The refinance and transfer were both in July. The mortgage is $500,000. No cash was taken out. It thinks I have a $1,000,000 mortgage.

I should add that Turbotax correctly reports (from my 1098's) that I have paid 15k in property taxes and 26k in mortgage interest, but then insists that I take the Standard 24k deduction. (Even if only 10k of the property taxes are now deductible, that still means I have 36k in deductions from mortgage interest and taxes alone--obviously a lot more than 24k.) Clearly it is adding together my 640k mortgages (which are a single mortgage that got refinanced) and disallowing the interest.

I went in the forms and opened the Tax & Int Wks. Near the "bottom" there is a Mortgage Interest Limited Smart Worksheet in the Interest Deductions section. I changed the “Does your mortgage interest need to be limited?" to "No".
I also went each 1098 form and verified everything was correct.
All,

I was having this same problem. Kept applying the limit (adding I think the original and refi amounts) and then putting me into a standard deduction. To fix it what worked for me was that at the point where I was asked if the limits apply, I said "no." But, I did not click "continue" but instead saved the file and exited TurboTax. Then reopened it and went onto the next section manually. This got me all the way through federal and state checks and it is ready to efile. Haven't done that yet as this is my first pass through and I like to come back a week later and re-check everything. But I think it got me past the problem.

In 2019 My mortgage company sold my loan. I also did a refinance. I did not pull out any money. When i enter in all three 1098s it shows that I owe 3,600 federal and get back right at 4k state, so I am $350 to the good. However, in error check process it wants me to check limited interest box and then changes my return to owing 8,800 and only 2k return state. I have had to delete two files and start over and the exact thing happens each time. It is adding the three loan values together and so it looks like my home is over a million when it is only 414k. In looking at message boards many others are having this issue. Do you know when this bug will be resolved?

I am not a tax professional but I am not sure entering something different than the 1098 is the correct solution here. I think that is the reason there is a followup question after entering the 1098s to see if the mortgage interest limit really applies to you....but due to a bug in the program its not working correctly. It seems like the easiest thing would be to just fix the bug. Has anyone heard from TurboTax on if they are working on this issue?

This is a definite error in TT. I am having the same issue. My loan was sold to a different lender. I enter in both 1098's accurately. TT error check wants me to enter in limit/int points. I was really confused. It ended up dropping me down to standard deduction, which will make a difference of $3k. It seems to want to combine my two 1098's into a total mortgage over the threshold even though the actual mortgage is only about $500k. What's worse is that trying to troubleshoot it out on my own (thinking I messed up somewhere) has screwed up my return to the point where I think I'm going to have to start my return all over from scratch. I was all ready to file and the error check made me go back to "fix" a perceived problem in my return, which was really just an error in TT's software. Otherwise it would have been ready to file.

I’m really not understanding the problem at this point. With all the diagnostic files that have been submitted, TT should have some idea what’s going on. At this point, I’m giving them another week to get their act together or I’m switching products. I’ve been a loyal TT customer for 15 years but this is unacceptable!

I just spend 10 hours trying to fix this issue of the home loan interest and refinancing with 2 lenders and 2 loans being purchased by another bank. The Turbo tax assistant who I called said it is an obvious bug but we got cut off before she remedied it. Im tired of working on it-

This is how I solved it..... A -you can do it with the forms and not use easy steps but this is time consuming and complicated. B- When you get to the yes my loan is over 1mil or no it does neither of these situations apply you can leave the no box checked and NOT hit continue. Instead just click on deductions on the top and continue onto the next section. Error check will pass and it may ask for an amount of the loan in one where the 1098 was left blank. Just put 0. It may ask for total fair value of home, you can enter that amount as you know or from your last appraisal. WOW I hope Intuit fixes this Turbo tax problem. Also as a side note if you call support and you have a mac there is a great chance they will not be able to see your screen with the 1st method they try. There is another method called Glance which my first support rep did not know about so she hung up on me. Make sure they try the 2nd method for you to see your screen and help with the turbo tax issue for FY 2019.

Unchecking the box resolves the issue, but if I go back to review, the problem recreates itself. It must be adding the loans without considering that it's double-dipping because it was a refi and not an additional amount.

It is obvious that Turbo Tax is not processing the 1098s properly (they are not asking enough questions and are treating each 1098 as if it a separate loan. This late into the season the Intuit should have already fixed these. It is obvious that Corporate Leaders of Intuit (Turbo Tax) no longet care about the quality of their product. They don't want to spend the money.

I have updated TT to the most current update. I see not place to indicate that the loan is the refinancing of another loan. When I answer no to the question no to the two questions (was loan over $1mm or $750k) then hit done, TT is changing the answer back to yes and limiting the deduction. All we did is refinance the original mortgage from 2012 during 2019. The average loan amount is above $750k in 2019, however since you look back to the date of the original loan, this limitation should not apply. What am I missing?
