topic I found out that in 2018 I took itemized deduction when standard deduction was clearly more beneficial. Are there other benefits of taking itemized deductions? or mistake in Deductions & credits

I am wondering if it was an oversight last year on my end or there are other benefits of taking itemized deductions (hence, the system took it over standard deduction last year)?

It is your choice. Turbo Tax gives you the larger deduction. You must have answered a question somewhere to force itemized deductions. Are you filing Married filing Separate? How much is on the 1040 line 8? Do you have a Schedule A?

If you took the itemized instead of standard you might be able to amend your return.

Itemized deduction is few thousands less than $24,000. Based on what I can tell, standard deduction is much beneficial. I cannot think of any scenarios where smaller itemized deduction is more advantageous?

How much is it showing? Maybe you got a different Standard Deduction if you used a different filing status than Joint, like Head of Household.
