topic energy tax credit in Deductions & credits

From what I read congress extended the energy tax credit for windows and door to cover 2018 and 2019. When I looked at my 2018 form 5695 the $525 expense for the door never yielded the 10% credit. If I had a carryover from 2017 my refund increased. Is this situation correct that I was not entitled to the credit in 2018? I have a window replacement for 2019 that I'm also going to try to get the credit for.

The credit was not available in 2018 but is now available in 2019 and also retroactively available for 2018. So you can amend your 2018 return and claim that credit.

The Energy Credit was just extended at the end of 2019, but they made it retroactive to January 1, 2018. So when you filed your 2018 return, the credit was not available on a 2018 tax return.

You will be able to amend your 2018 tax return and add your energy credit to your return when that program is updated. It is going to be a while until it is done.

Turbo Tax prioritizes the current year software over correcting prior years.

JulieS

I went back to the 2018 TurboTax program, verified it's up to date, and went into the amend return section. It is still saying I get $0 credit. Am I missing something or is it not available yet as the form 5695 is not available in the 2019 program?

The IRS has not yet updated the 2018 Form 5695 or the 2018 Form 5695 instructions, so you cannot amend the 2018 tax return at this time for the Nonbusiness Energy Property Credit.
