I have tested this in the desktop version of the software and am able to get it to work. Be sure your updates have run.

You may have entered vehicle registration expenses or personal property taxes on your Federal return that are carrying over to your state. Follow these steps:

Under Federal, click on Deductions & Credits

Under Cars and Other Things You Own, click Start/Revisit next to Car Registration Fees or Personal Property Taxes, depending on the applicable deduction

Enter the information in the screens that follow

You may need to troubleshoot your software.

So then why does Turbotax say "this is not common"???

Surely it would be pretty common since everybody has a car right? I mean most people in America anyway.

Turbotax quote:

Did you pay personal property taxes in 2019?
This is not common because it doesn't include property (real estate) taxes or car registration fees. Learn more

Personal property taxes includes taxes on the following:
Motor homes
Mobile homes
Planes
Boats

A "personal property tax" on your car is not all that common. That's because most things that people think of as car taxes are actually ad valorem taxes, that is, taxes based on the value of the vehicle. Well, to be clear, a car registration tax has to be an ad valorem in order to be deductible (I did not mean to imply that most car registration taxes are deductible, only the ones based on the value of the car - and this varies from state to state).

A "personal property tax" is a levy imposed on a person’s property. The tax is levied by the jurisdiction where the property is located, and it includes tangible property that is not real property. In other words, it could be on any asset you have that is not real property. So this is different from the annual vehicle registration, and this is why TurboTax says that it is not that common.

I'm having a similar issue with the 2020 Deluxe Federal CD version.

I'm in Federal Taxes > Deductions & Credits > Cars and Other Things You Own.

When I click Car Registration Fees' Start (or Update) button all I get is a blank screen.

If I click on Show Relevant Form, I can see the 2019 amounts in there, with a 2020 description.

Is the screen supposed to be blank? I have checked for updates (Online > Check for Updates) and it says that its up to date.

You may have supporting forms from last year in there preventing you from entering this year's data. Sometimes (if you transferred in a previous year's tax return), a $0 gets stuck on line items that had supporting detail information attached and you can't edit it. You can into Forms mode and erase that detail or fix it from the interview mode. When you click on EDIT next to the medical expense entry spot and see a $0 that you can't edit, there are 2 things you can do:

Double click in the field and use the Red X (Remove) to remove the supporting details worksheet. or

Go to the top Edit menu (Windows versions only) and choose Add Supporting Details. Then click on the Red X (Remove) at the top.

Either one of these should allow you to enter your expenses. @yukinon

For 2020 Federal Taxes, the referenced "Cars and Other Thing You Own" as the location to input Personal Property Tax Payments on cars does not show up. Where is it and how to I input these taxes?
