That can happen when a Calif Form 592-B or 593 is not entered correctly. See this FAQ about that. It says to start with the Calif return but you should actually do the federal part first (as always) - TT/Calif reacts to that federal entry of the 592-B/593 withholding.
<a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/2757572-how-do-i-enter-ca-form-593-real-estate-withholding">https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/2757572-how-do-i-enter-ca-form-593-real-estate-withholding</a>

Regarding Tax Year 2020 return....I file MFS in a community property state (CA). We do not file any other returns besides what's listed in the error so I was stumped. On my return, I had a negative adjustment for CA state tax withholdings. On my spouse's return, I had a positive adjustment. TurboTax only spits this error on my spouse's return. You can find this entry on the CA Tax Payments Worksheet Line 13 (Other state tax withholding).

Talked to a TurboTax rep today and he claimed it was because my spouse had a positive adjustment for CA withholdings. Stated CA probably wants to account for the additional tax added to my spouse's return. I'm still not convinced that's the reason as I'm not filing any other forms besides what's listed in the error. It seems like a software bug to me.

Hit the same situation. Is there a fix for turbotax 2024? Or I do have to mail my CA tax return?

Also for MFS, do we need to provide material / statement explaining how the income and withholdings are split in the amount or the CA tax board is able to find the two tax returns and match them?

My situation is filing MFS in CA. I end up evenly splitting my W2 and my spouse's W2 on both returns and that split was able to resolve the withholding differences as both returns now have the same withholdings from the W2s. Just e-filed and will see if that gets through.

OK, so you are OK now?

As for "do we need to provide material / statement explaining how the income and withholdings are split in the amount ", I would say no. Taxing authorities generally don't want any more paper or data than they ask for.

So document what you did and why, and save it in your tax archives, in case any one ever asks.
